Inside this contemporary cottage extension
A modern kitchen adds to the appeal of this renovation project in Wales
In May 2021, sisters Liz and Cath Williams embarked on a project to transform the cottage that they’d inherited from their grandmother, located in the picturesque Brecon region of the Welsh countryside, into a charming holiday rental home. Key to the project’s success would be a modern kitchen.
Contemporary extension
At the start of the project the sisters added a contemporary two-storey extension to the side of the detached cottage. It has floor-to-ceiling windows so guests can enjoy the panoramic views. Once this building work was complete it was time to design a kitchen for the ground floor extension.
Liz and Cath called in Masterclass Kitchens knowing that with their expertise they could create a modern kitchen that would not detract from the overall style of the cottage.
Modern kitchen
Since the scenic location and views were likely to attract many families and friendship groups, the kitchen would inevitably become the most used room of the property. So it would have to stand up to continuous use and be easy to care for. Liz and Cath opted for Masterclass Kitchens’ modern Sutton kitchen range.
The smooth surfaces with a satin finish not only enhanced the modern extension, but the chip-resistant easy-to-clean slab doors gave the sisters peace of mind that the kitchen would stand the test of time.
Practical island
The kitchen island in a deep Inkwell shade is the kitchen’s focal point, providing the kitchen with many practical qualities. On one side it’s packed with useful drawers, including one with divisions to make searching for utensils a breeze. On the other side, the island is indented beneath the worktop so that stools can be tucked beneath, providing a spot for casual dining or to perch while chatting to the cook.
Clever kitchen storage
Thanks to the designers at Masterclass Kitchens, this modern kitchen has plenty of preparation space. They maximised the storage too, with an L-shaped arrangement of base and wall units in a Highland Stone finish, plus further storage in tall cabinets built around the fridge freezer.
A sociable space
By July 2022 all the work was finished and the completed modern kitchen provides a practical, sociable place where guests can enjoy cooking and relaxing. ‘We’ve used the kitchen ourselves and are impressed with the standard,’ the sisters agree.
‘The island works well for preparing food, and the kitchen’s a great place to sit and admire the views.’
