Loft conversion ideas

When it comes to making better use of existing space, there’s little to compete with a loft conversion for sheer impact. Whether it’s part of a new project or a complete overhaul of an old building, the possibilities are myriad. You can turn a tired, dusty area of the house that’s home to little more than dust bunnies and Christmas decorations into a fantastic new and usable space.

VELUX, whose roof windows are a popular feature of many a loft room, have chosen the best loft conversion ideas from the last year to shine a light on those that have made best use of the space and truly enhanced their homes.

A new arrival

One runner-up, a conversion in a 1930s 3-bedroom home in York, shows how you can create a better living environment for a growing family. As the owners were expecting a second child, they expanded upwards, with a new master bedroom and en-suite incorporating VELUX INTEGRA windows to maximise natural daylight.

Balcony windows

In Northampton, Katherine and Anthony Yionnaki went a step further, adding those elements but also incorporating VELUX CABRIO balconies for dramatic effect and fresh air aplenty. The end result added space, storage and was sympathetic to their Edwardian redbrick home. The addition of VELUX blinds means they benefit from copious daylight but get the perfect blackout effect at night.

And the winner is…

All across the UK, couples and families are using forward-thinking conversion companies to create new bedrooms, playrooms and living rooms that let daylight shine on previously dark spots. VELUX’s 2019 loft conversion winner is in Worsley, Manchester, a semi-detached Victorian house in a conservation area.

The owners, Sarah and Jon Lloyd-Foster, has numerous structural issues to overcome, making the end result even more sensational. A new bedroom and en-suite were carved out of the old loft, incorporating six VELUX windows with daylight and safety for their children in mind. As Sarah says: “At night, we can see the stars above and it feels as though we’re in a treehouse.”
