Having a property that has a garage is not only a good way to get an extra abundance of storage but also a great opportunity to get creative with interior design.
Traditionally, yes garages have been used for cars and whilst you can do this, there are several ways to transform your garage into something completely different that fits more neatly with your lifestyle.
Whether working from home or converting your garage into your bedroom, we spoke to interior design and conversion experts on how to decorate your garage in 2025.
Meet the experts…
Monika Puccio is the Head Buyer at Sofa Club – a family-led business that makes and sells sofas.
Sylvia James is an interior design expert at HomeHow.co.uk
Eric Bramlett is a realtor and owner of Bramlett Real Estate, a mid-sized real estate brokerage.

1. Start with a vision
Prior to you designing anything, Monika at Sofa Club recommends defining the purpose you want your garage to be.
“Before you dive into decorating, think about how you want to use the space. Will it be a gaming room? A movie lounge? A casual hangout for friends? A clear vision helps guide your furniture choices and layout.”
If you are working from home you may even consider converting your garage into a home office, she-shed or man cave – whatever you prefer!
It could also be a multi-functional garage split into different sections. Planning before you start will help guide you in your decoration process.
2. Choose the right furniture for the space
If you’re redecorating your garage for a more comfortable room like a movie lounge, for example, you’ll want to ensure you have the right furniture space organised.
To do this, Monika distinguishes between three different-sized sofas. “For smaller garages, opt for a sleek 2-seater or a modular sofa. Look for designs with clean lines that won’t overwhelm the room.”
If you have a larger garage, you may be able to squeeze in a corner sofa, which Monika says “can create a cosy, defined seating area. Bonus points if it includes storage for blankets or gaming accessories!”
Lastly, if you’re using your garage for different reasons, like a gym and office, a fold-out sofa may be better suited for you. “Versatility is key in a multi-use garage. A sofa bed can turn the space into a guest room when needed.”
3. Prioritise Comfort with Soft Furnishings
Garages are typically a space that is seen as more utilitarian. But there are ways to elevate and invite a more luxurious look through subtle soft furnishings, especially if you’re transforming it into a lounge space.
Monika says simple additions like adding throw pillows and cosy blankets in complementary colours can make a difference. Or “using an area rug to anchor the space and warm up the concrete floors” can completely transform the vibe of a previously dull-looking garage.
4. Incorporate storage-friendly pieces
Depending on the purpose of your garage conversion, you may need more storage solutions. Sylvia James advises to: “Utilise the vertical space by installing wall-mounted shelves, cabinets, and pegboards to store tools, equipment and other frequently
used items.
Overhead storage systems can also be a very valuable asset as these help to free up valuable floor space.
Consider installing ceiling racks or utilising the space above your vehicles to store less frequently used items.”
Sylvia also suggests choosing clear storage containers to keep smaller items organised and easily accessible. “This not only enhances the visual appeal but also makes it much easier for you to find what you need quickly.”
Sharing an experience Eric Bramlett had with one of his clients, he says:
“I had one client who struggled with piles of sports equipment and seasonal items.
“We installed custom cabinets that fit everything perfectly, and suddenly the space felt open and functional. It’s also worth investing in quality storage solutions that match your needs—whether it’s a pegboard for tools or bins for holiday decorations, having a dedicated spot for everything makes the whole space easier to maintain.”
5. Flooring makes a difference
“Flooring is another area where people often don’t realize how much of a difference it can make”, says Eric.
The wear and tear that garages often see means that you want something durable to prevent making continuous major changes to the room.
“I’ve used epoxy coatings in several projects because they hold up well and can be customised with colours or even metallic finishes for a polished look.
In one project, we added a subtle pattern to the floor, and it completely changed the vibe of the space without being over the top.”
6. Lighten up your garage
Garages can sometimes be the darkest room in the home. So if you are going to use it for more than parking your car, it’s critical to invest in lighting.
No one wants to be struggling to see in their home, right? For better lighting, Eric advises: “Most garages have basic overhead lights, but adding layers of lighting makes the space much more usable”.
Adding LED striplights under cabinets for task lighting or installing track lights in areas where you want to work on projects can ensure you don’t have to deal with the restricted dingy dull lighting that often comes with garages.
Alternatively, if you prefer natural lighting, “adding a window or even frosted panels on the garage door can make a huge difference”.
Vicky mentions: “Maximising natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows or adding skylights can uplift the atmosphere, creating a bright and energising space.”
Mirrors can also help enhance lighting and make your garage space look larger thus elevating the environment.
7. Heating
Garages can be the coldest part of your home as they are usually at the front and are usually not primarily designed as a lounging area. This is especially important during the UK winter months. Therefore if you are choosing to convert your heating into a gym or relaxation space, you should the temperature more than if you are just using it to park your car.
Vicky Floros says: “Underfloor heating is a great shout in this space, or a mini-split heating and cooling system can provide an efficient alternative with straightforward installation.”
8. Incorporate Smart Tech
Vicky also recommends incorporating smart technology into your garage for ultimate convenience.
“Systems that control lighting, temperature, and sound can transform the space into a seamless and modern retreat.”
Having a home gym in your garage that is useable means there’s little room for excuses to miss a workout session.
9. Colour Palettes
The colour scheme of your garage can help brighten up the vibe of it, especially if you’re lounging or working from there.
Eric says: “The colour palette you choose can pull everything together.”
He shares how incorporating warm neutral tones and bold accent colours on storage bins and a wall-mounted organiser for tools can transform even the most basic garage into an intentional and cohesive space.
